PlayStation 4 system architect Mark Cerny in April confirmed that the Japanese company had a new console in the pipeline.
And Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan took to the PlayStation Blog to announce that the PS5 would arrive in 2020.
"One of our goals with the next generation is to deepen the feeling of immersion when you play games, and we had the opportunity with our new controller to reimagine how the sense of touch can add to that immersion," he said.
According to Ryan, PS4's successor will have "two key innovations" coming to the new controller.
Sony has revealed that PlayStation will drop the rumble technology used since the fifth generation of consoles in favour of haptic feedback.
The SIE CEO detailed that PS5 players will feel a "broader range of feedback" and will notice the difference in "crashing into a wall in a race car feels much different than making a tackle on the football field."
The second feature coming to the DualShock 4's successor will be adaptive triggers, which will be integrated into the existing L2 and R2 triggers.
Sony said that developers would have the ability to "program" the resistance of the adaptive triggers and it will allow players to "feel the tactile sensation of drawing a bow and arrow or accelerating an off-road vehicle through rocky terrain."
Haptics will also come into play with adaptive triggers by creating a "powerful experience that better simulates various actions."
The PS5 dev kits have already been sent out to developers, according to earlier reports.
And Sony has now confirmed that studios have received early versions of the new controller.
Leaked images reportedly surfaced of the PS5 dev kit in August on Dutch website LetsGoDigital.
