A little over a month before Sony’s PS4-exclusive titles The Last of Us Part II and Iron Man VR were set to launch, it was revealed today that both games have now been delayed indefinitely. The result of each delay, as you may have guessed, comes about in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic and how it has affected development pipelines.
Here’s what Sony and Naughty Dog had to say about the decision:
Update: SIE has made the difficult decision to delay the launch of The Last of Us Part II and Marvel's Iron Man VR until further notice. Logistically, the global crisis is preventing us from providing the launch experience our players deserve.

The Last of Us Part II director Neil Druckmann also chimed in on the news, imploring fans to please understand why this decision was made while also telling everyone to stay safe.
Extremely sad to deliver this news to y’all. Ultimately, the situation is out of our control. We hope you understand. Stay safe out there. ❤️ https://t.co/fqvp6sraX6

In the case of both The Last of Us Part II and Iron Man VR, this is the second time that each game has been delayed. Both were originally scheduled to release in February 2020 before then being pushed back to May. For The Last of Us Part II specifically, this delay likely is very upsetting for fans around the world, as it’s one of the most anticipated releases of 2020.
Still, this situation is one that seemed to be inevitable if prolonged. Not only has Sony had to resort to delays in the wake of the novel coronavirus pandemic, but other publishers such as Microsoft have also recently had to delay titles like Minecraft Dungeons and Wasteland 3. Additionally, Microsoft specifically has acknowledged that there are some great challenges being presented right now at a variety of its first-party studios around the globe.
It’s a bit bizarre to see both The Last of Us Part II and Iron Man VR delayed indefinitely without new dates, but that’s quite reflective of the situation we’re currently in. Hopefully, both titles can end up releasing not too much later than originally planned. We’ll keep you posted on release dates for both games moving forward.
And as I said a few days ago, it seems like, depending on how long this pandemic transpires, this might only be the tip of the spear when it comes to game delays in 2020. Not only could other releases in the May window soon see delays as well, but other titles throughout the remainder of the year could also surely budge now, too. We’ll just have to keep waiting to see what ends up happening in the coming days and weeks.
