On to next year.
The Entertainment Software Association announced the dates for E3 2021 Friday night, just over three weeks after the coronavirus outbreak forced the cancellation of this year’s show.
Next year’s expo will run from June 15-17, 2021, according to GamesIndustry.biz, noting that the dates for a “reimagined” event have been shared with the ESA’s partners.
The 2020 show was originally scheduled to be held from June 9-11 in Los Angeles, but seemed snakebitten from the start. It started with the leak of media members’ personal information following E3 2019, which led to a lot of distrust, and seemingly snowballed from there.
Sony decided to skip the event for a second straight year, then came talk of a “revitalized” event that didn’t sit over well with much of anyone, Geoff Keighley especially, a gaming media icon who’s been to every single E3 prior — he decided to pass on the show for the first time because of the direction it was going in.
Iam8bit, hired to be the show’s creative directors, resigned in March, all while coronavirus concerns grew greater and greater, resulting in a heavily rumored then quickly confirmed cancellation a week later.
There’s no telling what E3 will look like after a year off, or even how viable it will still be to the industry when it returns.
But since there’s an opening in June, IGN announced earlier Friday that it will be hosting its own digital event that month dubbed “Summer of Gaming,” which the site organized in collaboration with numerous publishers — included on the list were 2K, Square Enix, SEGA, Bandai Namco, Amazon, Google Stadia, Twitter, Devolver Digital, and THQ Nordic.
