The current season will draw to a close with a one-off live event called The Device, which has been moved from June 6 to June 15, while Season 3’s start date has been pushed back from June 11 to June 17.
It’s the second time the live event and Season 3 have been delayed, following a similar announcement in late May.
Epic released the following statement this week:
Recent events are a heavy reminder of ongoing injustices in society, from the denial of basic human rights to the impact of racism both overt and subtle against people of color. We’re acutely aware of the pain our friends, families, team members, players, and communities are experiencing.
We believe in equality and justice, diversity and inclusion, and that these fundamentals are above politics.
The team is eager to move Fortnite forward, but we need to balance the Season 3 launch with time for the team to focus on themselves, their families, and their communities.
The live event The Device will be delayed to Monday, June 15, and the Season 3 launch delayed to Wednesday, June 17. We know this delay comes on the heels of another one, and we appreciate your patience and understanding during these difficult times.
Epic recently confirmed plans to release Fortnite for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X this holiday season.
The battle royale game will also be among the first titles released with Epic’s new Unreal Engine 5. Fortnite is currently built with Unreal Engine 4 but it will be migrated to UE5 in mid-2021.
Epic said last month that Fortnite has over 350 million registered players and that in April, players spent over 3.2 billion hours in the game.
Over 12 million concurrent players participated in a recent live Fortnite concert by American rapper Travis Scott.
