No shock as Online Pass confirmed for Battlefield 3
The news was confirmed by DICE designer Alan Kertz on Twitter. When pressed on the reasons for the decision, he said that the decision to use the system was “because servers cost money, and used games don't make developers any money”.
Those who buy a pre-owned version of the game will be able to buy an Online Pass for around £8.
Its predecessor, Battlefield: Bad Company 2, included a VIP pass that could be redeemed to access additional content on the game disc that was otherwise locked.
The last high-profile EA release to not include an Online Pass was Portal 2, and before that Crysis 2. But these games were published under the EA Partners label, meaning their developers were free to opt-in or opt-out of the scheme.

I don't understand why people are acting like the online costs money after you buy the game. It comes with the game, just $60 and you get the multiplayer. I don't know why you guys are acting like you only buy used games.

SPEED It's funny how everyone is making it sound like they're greedy for doing this. Servers cost money, and they aren't cheap. Take it from someone who provided a free service for months before I even started breaking even. Used games don't send any money back to the producer. So unless you want shitty connections, or frequently changing hosts like in CoD, buy the full game or quit ****. The pass is free with a new copy of the game which most of you will buy anyways.
See the thing i don't understand is if 95% of the people playing will be buying the full game, whats the point in it? i guess they will get a few extra bucks from people who rent it and buy it used because they will have to buy the pass.

Right as this is said, all the children and people who prefer cod start getting mad. YOU DO NOT NEED TO PAY ANY EXTRA FOR ONLINE! You get a free code with the game, which when you put it istantly when you get the game, allows you to get certain online features like weapons. The online time your "Forced" to buy the code is when your either mentally challenged and dont put it in on day 1 and loose it, or you buy a used game.

Halo13PersoniLewisBF3pvtpunchu **** the online pass, you are already paying over $60 for the damn disc.
Its not like you're paying anything extra for the online pass. It is in the game case when you buy it.
If you loose it or buy a pre-owned version you will have to buy another code. Just another way to con the players who have to save up their hard work money. Call of duty on the other hand = Free. Not a fanboy just stating the obvious. Pvtpunchu has a point here.
Come on lets be real, if you lose the code when you just bought the game than there is something wrong with you. That is why you put the code in first, I don't see why you would wait, and look at call of duty their connection is **** people always dashboard it's just not worth the trouble and the only reason it isn't free is because they don't have dedicated servers and if battlefield didn't either than you probably wouldn't have to pay. So no he really doesn't have a point because like the article said servers are not FREE.
Gears of War 3 offers dedicated servers.. i didn't see them forcing you to buy an online pass. It varies from game to game.. it hasn't been confirmed but i wouldn't be surprised if MW3 will force you to buy an online pass.
