Steam Refunds Not Impacted by Flight Simulator install Process

Valve is working with Microsoft to "improve the download experience"

Yesterday I reported on the news that several Steam users were frustrated at Microsoft Flight Simulator for its installation process. This process finds Steam versions of the game opening up another launcher which then downloads and installs the game while racking up the players Steam playtime. This was raising concerns about the refund process, but according to Valve, the time spent installing it doesn’t count.

PC Gamer reached out to Valve to ask about the refund process for those who have spent incredible amount of hours downloading and installing the game. “The time it takes your machine to download the additional content will not be counted against the Steam Refund Policy,” said VP of Marketing Doug Lombardi.

So really, if you’ve spent 12 hours downloading and installing Microsoft Flight Simulator, it seems as if Valve will still allow you to refund the game. Steam’s refund policy states that players can only request a refund for a product they have purchased providing they have less than 2 hours of playtime.

Lombardi also told PC Gamer, “We are working with Microsoft to see if we can improve the download experience,” however he hasn’t elaborated on this and I assume we’ll hear about some changes and improvements soon. Hopefully, something can be done about the installer itself eating up CPU by just simply running.
