We’ve heard rumors all year long that Nintendo was planning to bring back the Wii U release of Super Mario 3D World in a new port for the Switch, and as of today, that rumor has now been confirmed.
Announced to kick-off Nintendo’s Super Mario 35th Anniversary Direct today, Super Mario 3D World is now slated to officially come to Switch on February 12, 2021. Nintendo stated in the opening of the Direct that release dates could be subject to change given development difficulties that have come about in the wake of COVID-19, but for now, this is when it’s set to arrive.
As for what’s new in this edition of the game, online co-op is likely the biggest addition for many fans. Compared to the original release, fans will now be able to play Super Mario 3D World together with one another without needing to be on the same couch.

Perhaps most notably, though, is the addition of a new portion of the game that is called Bowser’s Fury. Details of what this will entail weren’t really given in the reveal trailer for the game, but this port’s full title is actually Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury, so whatever it is, it seems to be a big part of the larger package.
All in all, this isn’t a surprising announcement whatsoever, but it is great to see one of the better Mario games of the past decade getting another shot. For more news from today’s Direct, Nintendo also announced that the Super Mario 3D All-Stars collection is set to release in a little over two weeks.
