Microsoft and Dolby have announced that at launch, both Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S will support Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Dolby Vision will initially be supported through streaming apps, with support for games to follow in 2021.
Dolby Atmos, on the other hand, will be there for games and apps that support it on day one. According to the official blog, these technologies will arrive “first on Xbox”, which opens the door to their release on PS5 and other platforms later down the line.
Dolby Vision is one form of HDR, essentially a smarter, more dynamic version of HDR 10. It creates a vibrant image with deep blacks and bright highlights. The tech is already supported on many TVs, but very few games actually use it. Even then, support is limited to PC.
Dolby Atmos is the company’s new surround sound tech. It typically relies on a lot of smaller speakers to create the effect that certain sounds have dedicated speakers. The effect can also be achieved, with varying results, through less-expensive setups like soundbars. On Xbox, Dolby Atmos will be available for headphones, home theatres setups and soundbars.
