In a new update on its support site, publisher 505 Games said an internet connection is required to play the single-player game as not all of the content fits on one Xbox disc.
“Control Ultimate Edition, including all the latest expansions is over 50gb so we’re unable to fit everything on the Xbox disc,” it explained. “We have used Xbox intelligent delivery to provide some content on the disc and the rest via download.”
Intelligent Delivery is a developer facing technology used to reduce the size of Xbox game installs.
The internet requirement for Control Ultimate Edition was brought to light on Twitter by DoesItPlay (via Eurogamer), which said it had seen reports of players being unable to progress beyond the campaign’s opening maintenance elevator without downloading an update.
“On PlayStation 4, this isn’t the case as Control Ultimate Edition fits on a single disc, due to compression and other variables,” 505 said.
“Once you have downloaded the game, rest assured you do not have to be online to play!”
Currently available for Xbox One, PS4 and PC, Control Ultimate Edition includes the base game plus all post-release content.
Digital PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions will follow at the end of 2020, before physical next-gen versions arrive early in early 2021.
505 Games will only offer free upgrades to the next-gen version of Control to players who own the Ultimate Edition, meaning those who purchased the game previously will not be eligible.
