One of the many things that were canceled due to COVID-19 this year were big gaming conventions like E3 and PAX West. After all, getting that many people in one place is only a recipe for disaster due to the ongoing pandemic. However, with a vaccine seemingly on the horizon, event organizers are setting the plans in motion for conventions in 2021. Of course, everything could easily change. That said, today, the teams at ReedPop and Penny Arcade officially announced dates for PAX East, PAX West, and PAX Unplugged.

If the dates stay intact, PAX East will take place from June 3-6 in Boston. That places it about a week before E3’s proposed dates. It’ll be interesting to see how that affects the two conventions. Hopefully, everything works out well; however, the idea of being a developer going to both conventions back-to-back sounds exhausting. On top of that, the date seems a bit optimistic given how long it could take to get a vaccine widely distributed. It’s not impossible, but I would not be surprised to see this pushed or canceled.
West and Unplugged seem much more likely. West is set for September 3-6 in Seattle, while Unplugged is scheduled for December 10-12 in Philadelphia. Both of those will hopefully be far enough out from a vaccine being more widely available, making them feel like they could happen. Of course, it’ll all come down to PAX working with the various city’s to make sure the event is safe. However, I would be very surprised to see East actually happen in June. Only time will tell, I guess.
