After several years of waiting and high levels of anticipation, Cyberpunk 2077 finally made its way into the hands of gamers everywhere. However, the launch for the long-awaited title hasn’t exactly gone smoothly; across the board players are running into a litany of bugs and technical issues, which are especially noticeable with the game’s performance on PS4 and Xbox One. While CD Projekt Red offered players the chance to request a refund following the game’s shaky launch, it appears that some are having difficulties (or being outright refused) while getting refunds processed through Sony and Microsoft.
On ResetEra and elsewhere across social media, several owners of Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 and Xbox One have reported being unable to obtain refunds for the game after CD Projekt Red released a statement this week that it would assist players unhappy with their purchases. Initially, CD Projekt Red stated that players who purchased the game digitally should contact Microsoft and Sony’s support teams for assistance with requesting refunds, while detailing that those with a physical copy could contact the studio directly for assistance.
However, several players have reportedly been turned down by Sony and Microsoft when requesting a refund for the game through their digital stores. Specifically, Sony seems to be refusing refunds on the basis of its store user policies, which prevents a title from being refunded once it has been downloaded to a player’s console unless the software is deemed “faulty.” Of course, currently on PS4 (especially the older base hardware) Cyberpunk 2077 is facing a number of performance issues, but Sony is seemingly urging players to wait for upcoming patches from CD Projekt Red early next year that will reportedly improve the game’s performance. Microsoft also has seemingly been denying requests for refunds, as other players have reported online.

@CyberpunkGame So, CD Projekt Red came through and said they'd agree to refunds for PS4 owners.

Sony? Not so much. If you downloaded it, they will not refund the title. pic.twitter.com/TUutotHl3b

Overall, there seems to be mixed messaging on CD Projekt Red’s part alongside Sony and Microsoft in regard to refund requests for Cyberpunk 2077. It’s worth noting that some console players have been able to get their refunds processed, though it’s hard to gauge whether there is a consistent ruling on which refund requests are being honored, especially with the game having such widespread issues on older console hardware. While CD Projekt Red has promised that updates will be coming to further optimize and improve the game’s performance on PS4 and Xbox One, it will still be at least a month or two before those larger patches will take effect.
Cyberpunk 2077 is available now on PS4, Xbox One, Google Stadia, and PC, with optimized versions of the game for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S coming next year.
