Tencent Acquires Warframe, Gears Tactics Developers

4.4
Tencent's spending spree continues. Last week it was reported that Tencent was purchasing the parent company of Warframe, and that has now been confirmed as the Chinese media conglomerate has acquired Hong Kong-based game studio Leyou.

Tencent's imprint in the world of gaming is hard to deny, as it controls 11.5 percent of PUBG, 40 percent of Epic Games, and 100 percent of Riot Games. Now, Tencent owns Leyou, including its subsidiaries Digital Extremes, Splash Damage, Athlon Games, Kingmaker, and Radiance Games. Tencent has somewhat of a stranglehold on games in the Chinese marketplace, and this continues with this recent acquisition, although perhaps not as big news as Microsoft purchasing Bethesda.

Most notable on that list would be Digital Extremes and Splash Damage. Digital Extremes is the developer behind Warframe, the free-to-play online co-op shooter that first launched in 2013. Fans shouldn't be too concerned to see the game change hands in terms of who now owns the title, but it is certainly interesting to see a new owner take over.

For Splash Damage, its most notable game was 2011's Brink, an interesting first-person shooter with unique gameplay elements. Although the game didn't turn out to be a huge success, the developer went on to continue making games including the successful Gears Tactics, a new take on the Gears of War franchise outside of the standard third-person shooter games. Now that Tencent owns Splash Damage, it will be interesting to see what the developer works on next.
