When playing normally, as Capcom would have intended, Resident Evil Village takes around nine hours to complete. However, less than a month since its release, speedrunners have already dwarfed that time, getting the record to under an hour and a half.
According to speedrun.com, the record currently sits at 1 hour, 23 minutes and 57 seconds, courtesy of runner spiceeTV. It’s a close race, as this run only beat the previous record by 22 seconds.
Most players compete in the New Game+ category, and there’s only one submitted run in ordinary Any%. That record goes to DrAlbarn, who completed the game from a fresh save in just 1 hour, 45 minutes and 54 seconds. But of course, the competitions don’t end there. In case you wanted to face even more of a challenge as you race your way through the horror game, there’s a separate category for doing so while only using a knife to defend yourself. That feat goes to maxylobes, with an immensely impressive time of 1 hour, 55 minutes and 45 seconds.
For obvious reasons, most mods are banned for speedruns of the game. Unfortunately, that means you’ll miss out on a whole host of creative fanmade additions to the title. Most notably, this includes turning Lady Dimitrescu into everything from Mr X, to Thomas the Tank Engine. And if you’re sick of all things tall vampire lady, you can even mod Ethan’s baby - turning her into a miniature Chris Redfield. Or visa versa, but please do not do that - it’s easily the most terrifying thing to come to the series yet.
Resident Evil Village released May 7, 2021. It is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PC and Google Stadia.
