Should Exploiters be Punished for MW3 Devs’ Mistakes? Bowling Answers

4.3
The infamous prestige token glitch is coming to an end with the next Modern Warfare 3 patch (1.08), but this particular glitch has raised an interesting debate between the “abusers” and MW3′s creative strategist, Robert Bowling.

Robert Bowling believes that a fix is included in “the next title update for MW3″ to rectify the prestige token glitch, but with all the bans that Infinity Ward issued, this issue definitely left its mark. Some players, who admittedly abused the glitch, are arguing with Robert Bowling that since the team behind MW3 dropped the ball in terms of game design, the exploiters shouldn’t be punished for it. Bowling explained “we will fix it [prestige token glitch]. However, it’s important “we make it clear that its not okay to exploit, even while we’re fixing.” One angry player questioned Bowling on the merit of banning players for exploiting a design flaw, Bowling reiterated players are ”not banned for there being a glitch, banned for abusing it.” In regard to the argument of how can the security team hand out bans for problems in the game itself, Bowling explained why it’s not his (security team’s) fault, “unless I came over to your console and got you prestige tokens that you knew you didn’t earn. Then no, I promise you, I am not.”

Aeowin No. The xbox terms of service state modify of the XBOX CONSOLE itself, is a bannable offense. There is nothing that specifies game specific glitches.

Those are up to the developer. And furthermore, customers are not presented a terms of service before accessing call of duty multiplayer. Which if this is how robert bowling is going to act, then there needs to be. Otherwise, the players really are at no fault.

It's a glitch they abused. But it's also a glitch that IW failed to patch IMMEDIATELY. It should have been fixed the second they knew about it to prevent abusing.

But they left it there, and then banned the "abusers" (which I know people with -7000 tokens who haven't been banned and I had -230 and got banned) and even after handing out bans, still did not fix it. Instead he uses the excuse "it's coming in the next title update".

Honestly, the most efficient to of handled it, would have been to reset all players with negative tokens custom classes to default (to account for double weapon xp) reset negative tokens to 0, remove the double xp from everyone who used negative tokens to get it, and patch the glitch.

And move on. Bans and resets should only be handed out when players modify the game. This glitch was the developers coding mistake. No one should be punished for it.

And by playing MW3, you agree to their Terms and Conditions.

I don't recall agreeing to their terms and conditions. Only Microsofts.

its not microsoft's terms of service that allowed IW to ban the people who abused the glitch, its MW3's Code of conduct, here's a link to them: http://community.callofduty.com/thread/200386535

Aura It might have been okay if it only happened to a small number of people but like 98% of the players who did the glitch did it on purpose. That means those players exploited the glitch and were aware of the consequences.
I didn't do the the glitch because I knew it would've get you banned, so don't act like it wouldn't be your fault if you got banned.
