Rumour: Microsoft Points to be scrapped by end of 2012

4.3
The Microsoft’s Points system, used for Xbox Live Marketplace and other Microsoft marketplaces, is set to be abolished by the end of the year, according to a Inside Mobile Apps report. The site reckons that local, real-world currency will replace points. Microsoft only uses real-life money for when games are bought from Games on Demand, although the option is available to also buy them with Microsoft Points.

Microsoft Points has been around the release of Xbox 360 in 2005, and has also been around for other storefronts including Zune Marketplace, Games for Windows Live and Windows Phone 7.

I'm pretty sure it won't take long to spend a bunch of Microsoft points anyways.

TheBrownGuy They better refund me for the points I currently have...

It says the end of 2012. You probably won't have the points you have now by then. Unless you cheated/hacked and have thousands of MSP, and then you shouldn't/wouldn't get refunded. And you saying "they better". If they don't what are you gonna do, sue them?

This is a horrible idea for Microsoft, there sales will probably go down from this. Not only is harder for those who don't have a credit card, but people will be more reluctant to buy DLC and Games on Demand now.

Why? Microsoft points convert real money to virtual points, making it easier to spend them. Would you really have spent 60 dollars on Black Ops DLC if it said 60 dollars. Probably not. And if you would have, a large amount of others would. Microsoft points make it indirectly seem like you're not spending money. Hopefully everyone knows that Microsoft points and money are directly associated, but few care about how much money they're spending, because they're "points". By making a math equation that will cause inconvenience to do mentally, they get a lot of people to say,"Yes, I'll spend x amount of MSP on that", but little do they know or care that its very overpriced.

In Summary: Publishers can overprice their products and hide it with microsoft points. This will end up hurting them.

ButtPlugBandit Great, I moved to Europe and have no credit card. I rely solely on MSP that I get as gifts for holidays/birthdays. WTF am I gonna do now?

Credit card's only take 2 week to set up.

I don't like this idea at all. Some people don't have credit cards or they just don't trust to use their credit card on Xbox Live. I think they should rethink what they are about to do.

well, they BETTER refund us if we have points in our balance, and they just delete them, or give us a conversion of MS points into money on our account.
