Mass Effect Legendary Edition sales were ‘well above’ EA’s expectation

Electronic Arts has said that Mass Effect Legendary Edition sales far exceeded its pre-release forecasts.

BioWare released the well-received Mass Effect Legendary Edition, a three-game remaster collection, in May 2021.

“The launch of Mass Effect Legendary Edition, the remaster of the first three Mass Effect games, reignited the passion of fans around the world, driving sales performance well above our expectations,” EA CEO Andrew Wilson said during the publisher’s first quarter earnings call on Wednesday.

“Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order coming to the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 was also a moment for new and returning players to jump into that amazing game,” he continued.

“We are going to continue to invest in both of these franchises as well as more of our amazing IP.”

“We are in early stages on the project and can’t say any more just yet, but we’re looking forward to sharing our vision for where we’ll be going next,” it said at the time.

In December, BioWare revealed that a number of Mass Effect trilogy veterans had returned to work on the next entry in the series.

During an earnings call in May 2020, Wilson suggested EA would create a Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order sequel after Respawn‘s 2019 game surpassed expectations with over 10 million sales.

And this June, EA claimed the game had been “played” by over 20 million people across all platforms and subscription services.

More recently, EA suggested it won’t announce any new Star Wars games until 2022.

During Wednesday’s earnings call, Wilson also said returning to releasing a new Battlefield game every two years “probably makes sense”. However, he suggested players should “think about Battlefield as a service” and teased “free to enter components” too.
