Minecraft built $80 million in revenue

4.5
Financial filings in Sweden reveal Minecraft has earned $80 million since its launch in October 2010. The Financial Times reports developer Mojang's game is creeping on 25 million registered users, with over five million having bought the full game.

"We've been approached by a number of high-profile Hollywood producers and asked to do TV shows," said Mojang chief exec Carl Manneh. "We may do that. It's hard when you don't have any experience and someone comes to throw these ideas around. We have so much to focus on with just the game development and growing the business. But if the right idea comes along and the right people that we'd want to work with, we'd say why not?"

Merchandising, merchandising! The FT notes that Minecraft merch has brought in an additional $1 million in revenues, with that number increasing as the phenomenon evolves. We're sure Mojang is keeping an eye on its Finnish neighbors at Rovio to see how it can build one game into an even larger empire.

iaaaan You never would of expected minecraft to come that far.. I remember in alpha when there was only a handfull of people who brough it.. they have to bring out some much needed updates though such as a good skill system or sales of the game will most likely go down. If they could also stop the "cracked" version of minecraft sales would skyrocket
I own a "cracked" version and plan on buying the game when i get a working credit card. Someone once even asked Notch if he would give the person a free account and Notch told them to download a "cracked" client and if he still felt like buying it later, then to buy it. You can find it in either his blog or twitter, but i cant remember which right now.

Most indie developers don't care if you pirate their games, they only care if you intend to make money of piracy/cracking. Same goes for the guy who made angry birds.

Decent hard working game devs like Mojang deserve all the support and success they get.

As long as they don't ever sell out, Minecraft will always be up there with my top games.
