Sony's PS3 mistakes helped Xbox 360 succeed

Robbie Bach, former president of Microsoft's Entertainment & Devices Division, says Xbox 360's success is partly down to Sony's mismanagement of the transition from PS2 to PS3.

Speaking at the Northwest Entrepreneur Network (via GeekWire), Bach said it was vitally important for companies to capitalise on their rivals' mistakes.
"Some of the success of Xbox was due to the fact that Sony did some really not so smart things," he suggested. "They mismanaged their 70 percent market share. It's a long conversation.

"The transition to PlayStation 3 was really, really bad. And really hard. They mismanaged their partners, they mismanaged their cost structure. They made their next platform so complicated that developers couldn't develop for it."

Another factor in Xbox 360's success was Microsoft's ability to strike up strong partnerships with publishers like EA and Activision.

"When you're doing a startup, you need friends," Bach said. "It's just the way life works. It turned out we were able to convince retailers and publishers like Activision, Electronic Arts and others, that it was a good thing for Microsoft to be successful, because if we were not successful, the only game in town was Sony. Being dependent on somebody else was bad for them, and so they supported us disproportionately to what they should have, mathematically."

Bach also described the infamous Xbox 360 'Red Ring of Death' hardware failures, which cost Microsoft $1 billion in warranty extensions, as "the most painful thing in my life".

I'm not doubting that we may have been breached, but i'm pretty dam sure that microsoft is doing something about it. You guys were shut down because sony has no security at ALL!! Why do you think online is free?

No it's still pretty much easy to hack a ps3 online or off. Xbox not so easy with patches coming from left and right. Not once have I been in a challenge lobby since tu7 on mw2 nor black ops nor mw3. Sure you can jtag any xbox but can you get it to go online.

As I was saying about the whole "Why do you think online is free?" thing. Your servers are complete ****. I've played at a friends house and lagged hard. Not just once or twice but everytime. And no its not his connection because it's happened at anothers friends house also. Ps3 servers are just **** in general.

If you want to "get away" then go to pc. As a matter of fact if you don't want to play online multiplayer games then go on a game site for instance nike(dot)com my siblings seem to like that alot. Oh and also not everyone pays for a mic....it comes with the xbox same with the controller and the hard drive....and extended hard drive is optional so is the extra controller. Does your ps3 come with a proper mic? Nope you need to buy one huh. And when you do and you do want to go online to play you have other players with shitty as mics where you echo EVERYWHERE. I don't mind paying 20 bucks every three months for good service. Also I didn't know that the slim you had to buy a wireless adapter last time i checked wireless adapter was already built in. I agree on you with the rechargable battery pack. But really a key board? Who the **** wants a key board when you have voice message? But if i do want a key board i can just hook up my pc key board. Bottom line is your argument is invalid and your just **** bad. Gtfo troll!


1. Sony has security, just because we do not have to pay it does not mean that we have no security after the whole PSN hack I am sure that they got some of the best security out there to stop it from happening again.
2. I can tell that you have no experience with the PS3 right here because you think that you can hack a PS3 with a firmware above 3.55 which is impossible at the moment. Game patches are not made by Sony or Microsoft, the game developers make them. You can not jailbreak PS3s that have had a firmware higher than 3.55 on them and once you go online you have to update to 4.00, which means that you have just proved that the Xbox 360 is easier to mod than a PS3 because you said that any Xbox 360 can be jtaged.
3. That lag you experienced is either the game that you are playing or your friends have bad internet connections.
4. A new mic and hard drive are only included if you get the $300 model. If you do not pay that extra $100 you only get 4gb and you get no mic. For $250 you can get a 160b hard drive. You can use any blue tooth mic. When ever I play Battlefield with my friends we all use mics and no one's mic echos. Now I am not saying that people do not echo on the PS3, but I have heard echoing on the Xbox 360 because they got cheaper mics because their Xbox 360 did not include one. Sure the new slim model has a wireless adapter, but the only fat model did not and you had to pay $100 to get it. However both versions of the PS3 had a wireless adapter built in.

xboxs credit info has been hacked into BUT you didn't know that did you but yes as of 3 months ago "hackers" have stolen credit card info paypal ect. THIS PROBLEM STILL HASENT BEEN FIXED why because microsoft is ignoring it. hoping for it to go away and just to say i rather have a company thats plays it safe and shut access to psn completely down.

ps3 is now HARDER TO HACK THEN XBOX as we can't just put a usb in anymore you have to buy a E3 flasher and downgrade it and its very easy to mess up. On the other hand "hackers" have the root keys to the 360 meaning ANY XBOX360 CAN BE J-TAGED.

the reason why ps3 has had bad servers is completely un-heard off as not once have i had a issue with lag xbox on the other hand has a host migration every 5 minutes.

i play ps3 to not talk to people in games i use it to "get away" like really can you seriously say that you like xbox because it has party chat congratulations you pay $60 to be able to talk to you friends. But wait you have to use a $40 xbox mic but for ps3 you can use whatever.

I'd just like to say, obviously there are problems for both Consoles. You do have valid points but what's the point to argue. I really doubt any of this fighting will get someone to switch over and even if someone did, who cares?

Anyway, one thing that really pulled me was just the amount of my friends who have a Xbox compared to a PS3.

I didn't know that Sony leaked their customer's Credit and Debt cards. Just because the PSN got hacked and Sony took the PSN system offline does not mean that the XBox Live system has not been compromised before. And the whole thing where you say that XBox Live has not been down once in four years, is such a lie it has gone down for maintenance before. I doubt you have even played on the PS3 because you have such biased views.

I will grant you the Party System which is nice, however you have to pay to get that feature. So please enlighten me as to what feature is so grand and great on the XBox 360 that makes it better than the PS3 because I just do not see it at all.

When one of my old Xbox 360s got the E-74 error they said it would cost $200 (This was the same price as a new Arcade) to repair it, that is freaking stupid. It is cool that your friend likes the XBox dashboard, I just feel it is too cluttered with ads, even though I have Gold I still get ads, I have only seen a few ads on the PS3 XMB menu and that was in the market section. Apps are cool I guess, even though you have be Gold to use them. I would much rather hook up my laptop to my tv and use that than pay $60 a year though. You might have apps, but the PS3 has a web browser. I have a quick question though, how does the tray on a PS3 get broke when there is no disc tray at all? There is a disc drive if that is what you mean, but if you really think that there is a disk drive I doubt that your story is real.

I've had both a PS3 and still currently have my Xbox 360 the reason I prefer my xbox to a PS3 is the controllers are far more comfortable, I got better customer support from Microsoft/X-box then I did from Sony/PlayStation (Probably cause your paying for one and not the other), I actually found that the majority of the games I played ran smoother/looked better on the 360 than the PS3 (And I'll give that the PS3 had better graphics on certain games also), and the community is more competitive on the 360 I found playing games such as Call of Duty and what not were a lot easier for me to dominate on than they were on the 360 and I'm all for the challenge, also I had both the PlayStation Move or whatever it was called and the Kinect and found the Kinect was better over it.

Also the whole "It has a blu-ray player" thing isn't much of a great thing to me seeing as I have a Blu-Ray player and really the PS3 seems to not play as good of quality as my Samsung Blu-Ray player.

They are both good consoles and I won't say one is vastly better than the other because both have their pro's and con's but I prefer my 360 over the PS3


I see where you are coming from and how you prefer the XBox 360 over the PS3, they are both good consoles, if only more people would realize this. I appreciate the fact that you do not start talking crap about the PS3 unlike others have.
