That’s according to YouTube itself, which has put together a detailed website showing the most popular creators and individual videos in each year of the game’s history.
YouTube gathered all 12 years’ worth of daily upload and view data from the tens of thousands of creators and millions of viewers who interacted with Minecraft videos to come to its findngs.
To celebrate the milestone, YouTube has created this music video containing references to numerous key moments and creators in the Minecraft YouTube community:
YouTube says that if each view was just a second long, that would add up to over 30,000 years of viewing time.
It also notes that the rate at which views are accumulating is growing rapidly, suggesting it may not take quite so long to hit the 2 trillion mark.
“As our data shows, it took around eight years for this community to generate 500 billion views, but only another two or so to double that and hit one trillion,” YouTube says.
“What future heights they hit we can only guess at, but as with this milestone, it will be fun to watch it happen.”
The original Minecraft has now sold over 200 million copies. While location-based spin-off game Minecraft Earth closed in June, reportedly due to COVID-related issues, 2020 release Minecraft Dungeons reached 10 million players across all supported platforms this February.
Last year, Mojang rebranded as Mojang Studios following its expansion to multiple studios and game titles.
Mojang Studios is working on “at least two all-new projects” in the Minecraft universe, according to reports made in September.
According to Windows Central sources, the projects are brand new, so not part of the original Minecraft or Minecraft Dungeons.
