According to the latest monthly sales report from market research firm NPD Group, Xbox outperformed its previous sales highs set in March 2011 (units) and March 2014 (dollars).
Xbox Series X/S was the best-selling console platform of both March 2022 and the first quarter in dollars, while Switch led unit sales in March and during the first three months of the year.
Xbox Series sales in Europe were higher than those of PS5 for the first time in February, and Xbox Series X/S were the top-selling consoles in the UK in March.
While Xbox Series X/S and PS5 have been available for nearly 18 months, both continue to suffer from stock issues as a result of a global chip shortage, although in recent months Microsoft’s consoles have been more readily available than Sony’s.
Last week, Xbox games marketing general manager Aaron Greenberg endorsed VGChartz figures suggesting Xbox Series X/S consoles have sold 13.87 million units in 17 months, compared to 9.38 million Xbox 360 consoles at the same stage of that console’s lifecycle.
Thanks to all the people who have helped support the growth and adoption of Xbox so far this generation. Lots of work ahead and hopefully supply continues to improve globally as well. https://t.co/4J4PVDOexb

Xbox 360 would go on to become Microsoft’s best-selling console to date with 84 million units shipped.
Elden Ring was the best-selling game for the second month running in the US in March.
Having made a blockbuster start at US retail in February, From Software’s game held off competition from new entries Gran Turismo 7 and Kirby and the Forgotten Land* to top March’s chart.
Elden Ring remains the top-selling game of 2022 so far and is now the second best-selling over the 12-month period ending March 2022, trailing only Call of Duty: Vanguard in dollar sales.
Other new entries included MLB: The Show 22 at No.4, WWE 2K22* at No.7, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin at No.10, Tiny Tina’s Wonderland* at No.11, Ghostwire Tokyo at No.12 and Triangle Strategy* at No.16.
