Lack of new consoles has 'penalised' industry, says Ubisoft

4.4
The abnormally long lifecycle of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 has "penalised" Assassin's Creed 3 publisher Ubisoft, its chief executive Yves Guillemot has said.

Speaking to Gamasutra, the CEO argued that it's less risky to create new IPs at the beginning of a new console cycle.
"What we missed was a new console every five years," he said. "We have been penalised by the lack of new consoles on the market. I understand the manufacturers don't want them too often because it's expensive, but it's important for the entire industry to have new consoles because it helps creativity."

Ubisoft has traditionally backed new console launches, with rich line-ups already present on the Nintendo 3DS and PS Vita, and of course the impressive Watch Dogs wowing attendees at E3.

"It's a lot less risky for us to create new IPs and new products when we're in the beginning of a new generation," Guillemot added. "Our customers are very open to new things. Our customers are reopening their minds -- and they are really going after what's best.

"At the end of a console generation, they want new stuff, but they don't buy new stuff as much. They know their friends will play Call of Duty or Assassin's Creed so they go for that. So the end of a cycle is very difficult."

The Ubisoft head argued that without these 'early risks' the pay offs that emerge later in a console cycle might not happen. For example, Guillemot noted, if it weren't for Rayman: Raving Rabbids, there would never have been a Just Dance.

"If you can't take risks because people don't buy, you don't innovate. And if you don't innovate, customers get bored."

Axe They do have a point. I wouldn't mind seeing a new console; but I doubt it will happen for a while.

It will happen within the next year! :)

Xmoda see you guys are comparing 2012 pc's to a 2005 xbox 360 oh i wonder which ones are better?

Rule34 Guys, remember the PS3 vs Xbox 360 arguments that died out a couple of years ago? This PC vs console argument is the new era of stupid arguments. Neither product is truly better than the other, it just matters what you're going for and what you want the PC or console for.

I honestly didn't really understand this article too well. I mean I sort of understood everything that was mentioned like taking risks and being innovative, but I still didn't see how that linked to the long life span of this current generation of consoles.

the problem with what you didn't mention is a nasty gaming rig can cost up to 4000 with 999 frames per second on ultra settings dx11? I'm sorry but consoles need to allow the customer to modify their ram, video card, audio card, CPU, and their power supply with out it being considered being a hacked system (jtag). console chipsets are compatable to almost any upgrade..

Ubisoft was saying they cant try new Ips with this 7 year old console having a fresh new console gets people to be innovative and such

Well truthfully i think the xbox and ps3 is best for stability and gameplay controls. i think the pc is better for ghrapics and ghrapics only. but if im getting cod or battlefield im getting it for the xbox. a new fallout game or a new bethesda game. ill get that for the pc. no sense paying a lot of money just to get a computer that can support a game like battlefield.

Well yes and no . For all the pc vs ps3 vs Xbox it's all a matter of personal preference some prefer one over the other and then people just start arguing about which ones better.
