Xbox 360 failure rate now comparable to PS3 failure rate
The “Red Ring of Death” was reportedly the result of an engineering flaw in the original launch design of the Xbox 360, which caused the unit to overheat and warp its motherboard. At one point, Microsoft wrote off $1.05 billion as the cost of replacing defective original units through an unprecedented customer service warranty program. The problem was allegedly solved by the design of the Jasper circuit board, which tolerated heat better, and then Xbox 360 Slim design, which took design steps to help solve the overheating problem.
Data released as part of the No Fuss Reviews survey indicates that the Xbox 360 Slim has the lowest overall failure rate of any Xbox 360 model, followed by the Elite, Arcade, Pro, and then Core models. In short, the newer your Xbox 360 model is, the less likely it is to go belly up due to overheating. Buyers coming to Xbox 360 late can now pick up reliable systems that will play the 360's large software library for years to come.
Will this lesson be carried into the next generation of hardware? Let's hope so.

SmurfsCartmanisPhatAR15 I have had the same xbox for 5 years never got rrod
I have only gotten RROD once and that was because of blackops zombies. I would play all day and not turn my xbox off.
Fraace 5 Years. 2 xboxs have never failed me.
(Upgraded my old one to the new elite, other than that, it still works perfectly fine)
Is the elite console worth buying? Im not sure weather I should buy it or not because of the fact that a new console will be coming out soon.
I would wait for the new console.
Oh ok I hope its worth it. The new console better not have any flaws like RROD

CartmanisPhatPecky Had my Xbox for so long. Just depends on how you treat your Xbox, and where you keep it etc. I clean my fans so often, to avoid overheating.
Yeah most of my friends who have had problems with their xbox's had cat hair in there fans.
They should have cleaned there xboxs every 4 months or so.

The 360 and ps3 have always had comparable failure rates(360s have had a overheating problem but the ps3 has had its share of problems as well) ...when people use them for the same amount of time and for games. All these studies do is test overall failure rates when most people on ps3s game way less and watch movies more(which doesn't stress the gpu). Also, maybe this is just an isolated case, but EVERYONE I know with a ps3 almost never uses it for gaming, just blurays, netflix, or not at all. Everyone I know that has an xbox is on it almost every day and plays proportionately way more games.
