In the statement posted on the company’s website, Mojang continued by saying NFTs are not compatible with the values of Minecraft. “NFTs, however, can create models of scarcity and exclusion that conflict with our Guidelines and the spirit of Minecraft.”
Mojang continued the statement by saying they are concerned about the association of NFT integration with certain Minecraft world files and skin packs. The examples they give include allowing players to earn NFTs by completing activities on a server or creating collectible Minecraft NFTs.
“Each of these uses of NFTs and other blockchain technologies creates digital ownership based on scarcity and exclusion, which does not align with Minecraft values of creative inclusion and playing together. NFTs are not inclusive of all our community and create a scenario of the haves and the have-nots. The speculative pricing and investment mentality around NFTs takes the focus away from playing the game and encourages profiteering, which we think is inconsistent with the long-term joy and success of our players.”
With the above in mind, Mojang has stated they are categorically not allowing blockchain technologies to be integrated into the Minecraft client or Minecraft servers. Additionally, any attempt to create NFTs based on in-game content is strictly disallowed.
Mojang concluded the statement by saying “We have no plans of implementing blockchain technology into Minecraft right now.” This statement is bigger than it initially appears, the developers of the best-selling game of all time coming out with a statement that forbids the use of NFT technology in association with the company’s intellectual property is a breath of fresh air when many studios refuse to rule out the use of NFT technology, or in Ubisoft’s case, actively integrate it.
