MultiVersus Safe from Discovery/Warner Bros. Merger

4
Earlier this year, WarnerMedia merged with Discovery to form Warner Bros. Discovery, and this move has already had a profound impact on the entertainment industry. Warner Bros. Discovery has abruptly canned near-complete films like Batgirl and a Scoob sequel, and it plans on combining HBO Max and Discovery+ into a single streaming service in 2023. These decisions have proven to be highly controversial, leaving fans of Warner Bros.-owned properties worried about their favorite franchises.

There's been some concern from the MultiVersus community about the new Super Smash Bros.-style fighting game potentially being on the chopping block in the wake of the merger, but fans apparently have nothing to worry about. MultiVersus developer Tony Huynh took to Twitter to ease fans' minds about the situation, claiming that the game will not be impacted by the Discovery/Warner Bros. merger.

Huynh's tweet about the merger came shortly after a different tweet where he said that he was "very unhappy" that the team "disappointed players." It seems that initial tweet led some fans to be concerned that Huynh was referring to the merger, taking it as a sign that MultiVersus was in danger of being shut down. However, that particular tweet was actually in reference to the announcement that MultiVersus Season 1 was being pushed back.

Originally, MultiVersus Season 1 was meant to kick off next week, but plans changed, and now the beta has been extended indefinitely. It's unclear exactly how long the MultiVersus open beta will last now or when Season 1 will start, but the beta Battle Pass has been extended to August 15. This could be a sign that MultiVersus Season 1 will still start relatively soon, but fans shouldn't hold their breath.

MultiVersus Season 1 wasn't the only thing delayed. Besides delaying Season 1, new MultiVersus character Morty, of Rick and Morty fame, has also been pushed back. It's unclear at the time of this writing exactly when Morty will make it to MultiVersus, but he will presumably be added whenever Season 1 rolls around.

So far, MultiVersus has enjoyed a great deal of success. MultiVersus is one of the most popular free-to-play games at the time of this writing, with the open beta drawing the attention of millions of players. The Season 1 delay may be disappointing news for some players, but the bright side is that the game will apparently not suffer because of the WarnerMedia/Discovery merger.

MultiVersus is available in open beta on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
