Infinity Ward Responds to Modern Warfare 2 Dead Silence Demands

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 developer Infinity Ward is giving fans some clarity on why it has changed up the way perks work in the new game, including making Dead Silence a Field Upgrade rather than a Perk. Recently, the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 open beta began, giving players the chance to see what the game is like before they buy it later in October. During this beta test, Infinity Ward requested player feedback for Modern Warfare 2 so that it might be improved upon before release.

Plenty of issues were brought up when fans gave feedback on Modern Warfare 2's beta. While there were things that the beta got right, such as its Gunsmith 2.0 system, gunplay, and most of its maps, players did have some issues they hoped could be fixed. Enemy footsteps in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 were outlined by many players as being something that needs to be changed. Infinity Ward promised alterations to footstep audio in the future, but regarding other requests for changes, it seems the developer is holding firm.

The Perk system in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is something that has been highlighted by fans as being slightly questionable, but as outlined in the developer's latest Community Update, it appears that Infinity Ward believes in its new way of managing Perks. As well as providing its own opinion on many of the matters raised by players of the beta, Infinity Ward stated that, while the new perk system departs from the original, the changes are a "nice shakeup" to how matchmaking will work in Modern Warfare 2.

As well, many players believe that the changes to Dead Silence, a Perk that previously let players move around the map silently, are too extreme. Now, Dead Silence is a Field Upgrade, which is an extra piece of equipment that must be activated manually. To Infinity Ward, Dead Silence would have been too strong in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 if left as it was. This led to the changes, and now those who want to rush in cannot do so without consequence.

This leads to a balance between freedom of movement and predictability, which could mean less frustration as players won't just be shot down by an enemy who crept up on them without any noise. Apart from not backing down on its Perk changes, Infinity Ward is also not bringing any changes to the controversial mini map in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which no longer shows red dots when enemies are shooting.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 launches on October 28 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
