Halo 3: ODST Has Sold 2.5 Million Copies

4.7

USA Today reports that Bungie's Master Chief-less, "glorified expansion pack" Halo 3: ODST has sold 2.5 million copies and brought in over $125 million since its release two weeks ago.

Yesterday, our own Patrick Klepek argued in favor of Bungie's approach with ODST. In his piece, Patrick reasoned that should the game go on to be a financial success, which it clearly has, and it’s only been out a few weeks, it would send a clear sign to other developers that taking risks (or at least, thinking about established brands in new ways) can be financially and creatively beneficial.

Well, ODST is a certified hit, and while it will most likely be a while before Bungie takes another adventurous sidestep with its juggernaut of a franchise, at least now the developer has a green-tinted frame of reference should it decide to try something “new” like ODST in the future.

Since we already kind of know the upsides, do you see any potential downsides to ODST's success?

Developers and publishers of popular franchises are getting the message that they can slap together small packages, charge full price and the dedicated fans will eat it up.

If a company can get $60 from the consumer for a smaller, cheaper iteration of their franchise, there is no motivation to create a grade A game...
