The function only works with text message supported phones. Messaging apps like iMessage (iOS) or WhatsApp (iOS, Android) will not work. Furthermore, mobile phones with prepaid plans are not supported, nor are Voice over IPs (VoIP). This step is also tied to the player's own phone number, meaning that if the phone gets lost or replaced in any capacity, the users still continue to receive Battle.net messages as normal if they get a new phone with the same number.
This gesture has caused a stir in the Overwatch community for reasons related to these limitations. Many players in the US only use prepaid phones, and others are not old enough to have their own phones. Some houses also have one phone but multiple family members playing at the same time. The basis behind Activision Bliizard's decision is tied into making it harder for banned or disruptive players to return to the game, but it has also cast away a large amount of players who have done nothing wrong and still have been affected by the decision in the same manner.
It should also be noted that if a player has lost their phone or their phone number for any reason, they can submit a ticket to Blizzard to get their number revoked or removed from their Battle.net account. No other comments have been issued by Activision Blizzard regarding the earlier issues, except that in the case of Overwatch, existing players won't have to deal with the phone requirements, although new users will face the same limitations.
