Beyond Good and Evil 2 may still be in "early development" according to a recent insider report. Announced in 2016, Beyond Good and Evil 2 developed an initial wave of excitement based on the quality of its 2018 demo and the original game's cult following. It was clear at the time, however, that Beyond Good and Evil 2 was years away. Few likely expected for Beyond Good and Evil 2 to still be early in development over six years later, though.

2016 was just the year that Beyond Good and Evil 2 was officially announced, of course. Rumors of a sequel being made began as far as 2003, when interviews surrounding the first Beyond Good and Evil revealed it was the first game in a trilogy. In 2008, confirmation of a Beyond Good and Evil sequel being in pre-production was confirmed. Series creator Michel Ancel would later confirm the 2008 project was rebooted, with the 2016 iteration a completely different game.

The 2016 iteration of Beyond Good and Evil 2 may be following the same path as the 2008 version, it seems. According to Insider Gaming, sources have indicated that Beyond Good and Evil 2 is currently in "early development" doing what's described as its "blocking phase" with just a few small areas and low-resolution textures. Development is continuing, however, as playtesting internally and externally at Ubisoft is said to have continued throughout summer 2022.



Insider Gaming also says that it has been given access to images and video of Beyond Good and Evil 2's current state of development, though it cannot share them publicly. Based on these images, Insider Gaming alleges that a reboot of Beyond Good and Evil 2 occurred sometime between the E3 2018 demo and now. The images were described as nothing close to the quality of what was shown in 2018.

It should be noted that the 2018 demo for Beyond Good and Evil 2 was a "pre-alpha demo," which means it wasn't actually representative of a full game but rather something expressly created as a proof of concept. It's not surprising to hear the real thing is completely unlike it, regardless of whether it's been rebooted or not.

In 2021, Ubisoft reported that development of Beyond Good and Evil 2 was "progressing well," though there's been no public showing of the game for a very long time. Beyond Good and Evil 2 even broke Duke Nukem Forever's record for longest AAA development, which is now over 15 years. With the departure of Ancel from Ubisoft in 2020, Beyond Good and Evil 2's development will hopefully have stabilized. Perhaps 2023 and 2024 will be more productive for Ubisoft.
