Sonic Frontiers was officially released earlier last month, and according to the official data shared by Sega, the game has managed to sell over 2.5 million copies in over a month, which is a phenomenal success for the series.

As reported by Euro Gamer, Sega shared this information recently on its official Japanese website and Twitter account. A quick comparison between the sales of Sonic Frontiers and Sonic Mania could give you a better understanding of the former's huge success, as the latter reached over 1 million unit sales only a year after its launch, whereas Frontiers sells over double the same amount in almost 40 days.

This incredible financial performance is already a big contribution to the franchise's sales in the current fiscal year. According to Euro Gamer, the franchise managed to reach over 5.8 million copies sold in the previous fiscal year, and with Sonic Frontiers, this year could already be a huge leap for the series in financial terms.

There are a number of different reasons that helped Sonic Frontiers to become a successful launch for Sega, but the game's new open-world approach is probably the most significant improvement over the previous iterations which already makes it a fresh experience in many aspects.

Also, we shouldn't forget about the Sonic movie that premiered earlier this year, which turned into a massive blockbuster in theaters, and probably encouraged many gamers to give the series a try with Frontiers.

Other than that, Sonic Frontiers was launched as a cross-gen title, which simply made it available on more platforms, leading to a higher number of sales.

Sega is not done with Sonic Frontiers yet, as the company plans to support it with new content after launch. So far, the developer has revealed three post-launch updates that will add further challenges, missions, and features to the game, including the much-anticipated photo mode to allow you to capture some breathtaking screenshots from Frontiers' beautiful universe.

Sonic Frontiers' excellent financial performance could be a key factor for Sega to continue the new approach in the franchise, and probably explore more open-world opportunities in the future, as it seems to be a good fit for Sonic.
