Patch 9 is described by Larian as “in essence, a response to the player community’s feedback throughout Early Access." The ever-reverent Paladin class is as you’d expect, a mix of holy offensive power and healing.
Paladin players will be required to choose an oath at the beginning of their playthrough. There are numerous variations of oaths but all of them involve upholding justice and righteousness. That is, except for the Paladin hidden subclass Oathbreaker which allows players to explore the life of a Paladin who has turned their back on everything they once stood for.
The two regular subclasses are the Oath of Devotion and the Oath of the Ancients. The former grants the player the spell ‘Holy Rebuke’ which grants an ally a buff that deals 1d4 Radiant damage to anyone who strikes them with a melee attack. The Oath of the Ancients gives the player ‘Healing Radiance’ which lets “nature heal all nearby allies.” Both Oaths also receive ‘Divine Smite’ which lets the player use a spell slot in combination with a melee attack to deal additional Radiant damage.
Another highlight will be the ability to reach level 5. Anyone familiar with Dungeons & Dragons will be aware of just how much of a power increase that level 5 brings to a character. With level 5 comes third-level spells like the classic ‘Fireball’ for spell-casting classes.
Reaction mechanics like attacks of opportunity have been changed. You may now choose if they are triggered, giving the player more strategic freedom in combat. Finally, the ‘Fly’ spell may now be used out of combat to reach previously inaccessible locations and out-of-reach treasure.
