Hay left Ubisoft last year after a decade at its Montreal studio, where he was credited for overseeing the Far Cry series during its most prosperous period.
In Blizzard’s end-of-year update published on Thursday, it was revealed that Hay has joined the company to helm its new IP.
Hay is “leading the team which is infusing this genre with Blizzard magic while crafting our first new IP since Overwatch”, it said. “The team has doubled in size this year and we’re looking to grow it even more in the new year!”
Hay joined Ubisoft to produce Far Cry 3 – which remains the series’ highest-rated game to date – and kept his role for virtually every instalment since, including Blood Dragon, Far Cry 4, Primal, Far Cry 5 and New Dawn.
The company veteran was most hands-on with Far Cry 5, on which he acted as creative director.
Blizzard announced its “AAA survival game” for PC and consoles earlier this year, describing the project as, “a world different from any other Blizzard has created.”
It added: “Blizzard is embarking on our next quest. We are going on a journey to a whole new universe, home to a brand-new survival game for PC and console.
“A place full of heroes we have yet to meet, stories yet to be told, and adventures yet to be lived. A vast realm of possibility, waiting to be explored.”
The company is currently staffing up and seeking to fill art, design and engineering roles on the project.
