Redfall is More Like Far Cry Than Left 4 Dead

4.4
Redfall developers have addressed the comparisons that the co-op vampire shooter game has been getting with co-op zombie shooter game Left 4 Dead. Like Left 4 Dead, Redfall is a co-op first-person shooter game where players take on the role of characters with distinct personalities. And like Left 4 Dead, Redfall has players destroying hordes of undead creatures, though it features vampires in place of zombies.

It's understandable why some fans have been drawing connections between Redfall and Left 4 Dead, though the gameplay showcased so far has not really given off all that much of an L4D vibe. Redfall doesn't appear to be quite as frantic as Left 4 Dead, and it features an open world as opposed to standalone levels. Redfall gameplay footage has clearly shown that the game is going for something different from what's presented by Valve's franchise, but that hasn't stopped the comparisons from being made.

While speaking to GamesRadar, Arkane's Ricardo Bare addressed the Left 4 Dead comparisons. Bare stated that he understood why Redfall has been compared to Left 4 Dead, but said that the game actually has more in common with Far Cry. Studio director Harvey Smith added to that, saying, "Redfall sometimes feels like what you'd get if you blended the Arkane creative values with Far Cry 2 or S.T.A.L.K.E.R." Needless to say, fans of those games may want to pay closer attention to Redfall if it wasn't on their radar already.

One potential problem with taking inspiration from Far Cry is inheriting that franchise's flaws. GamesRadar pointed out that Far Cry games can sometimes have open worlds that are perhaps too large, but Redfall shouldn't run into that same issue. Redfall's open world is smaller and the pace is "slowed down" compared to Far Cry.

Redfall sounds like it might be a tricky game to pull off, but Arkane has a proven track record that can't be ignored. The studio has been on an impressive roll since releasing Dishonored in 2012, following up that acclaimed game with Dishonored 2, Prey, and most recently, Deathloop. Most of Arkane's work has been praised by fans and critics alike, and so chances are good that Redfall will live up to expectations.

Rumor has it that the Redfall release date has been delayed internally and that the game is now expected to release at some point in May. This information comes from reliable leakers, but fans should still take it with a grain of salt. As of now, Redfall is without an official release date, but with the game still expected to come in the first half of 2023, more specific details should come to light sooner rather than later.

Redfall is in development for PC and Xbox Series X.

Runts Left 4 dead was a classic and nothing will be like it again.

Good job this is more like Far Cry then! Looks a pretty fun game, but my acquisition of new games is nearly exclusive to Gamepass these days...

Edit: I suppose acquisition is the wrong word here.
