Private Matches are, as the name implies, a custom game mode allowing players to create private multiplayer rooms either for themselves or squads of invitees. It was a highly requested feature for Call of Duty: Warzone and was eventually added in 2020, but has been absent from Call of Duty: Warzone 2 as not all features carried over in the sequel. Unsurprisingly, the return of Private Matches have been one of players' most requested features since launch.
There is no official update on the status of Call of Duty: Warzone 2's Private Matches, but Dexerto recently pulled up notes from a December interview with Warzone 2's developers with the most up-to-date information on the subject. As of just a couple of weeks ago, Private Matches for Warzone 2 were described as in development and planned for "early next year."
Some Warzone 2 updates:

-- No plans to add back plating while sprinting
-- Plating while running through doors should work after today's update

No further information regarding the release plans for Private Matches in Warzone 2 was provided. The developers did say, however, that they have an expanded scope for Warzone 2 that goes beyond what was previously available in Warzone. A "variety of features" will be added, is how it was described. Since the interview was just half a month ago, it's unlikely that plans have changed in the time since.
What Call of Duty: Warzone 2 players are hoping is that "early next year" will translate into Private Matches arriving with the launch of Season 2. There has been no official indication that this is true, yet. However, if "early next year" doesn't translate to February then there may not be another opportunity for such a large feature launch during winter 2023. Unless the developers meant the first half of 2023, it's either Season 2's launch or a likely delay.
It's unclear at this point in time when official information regarding Call of Duty: Warzone 2 Season 2 will be shared. But with less than a month before the new season's expected release date, that news has to be coming soon. It may or may not include Private Matches, but hopefully the feature will still be arriving "early" 2023, regardless.
Call of Duty: Warzone 2 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
