Mass Effect 2’s Lead Writer Mac Walters Leaves BioWare

4.8
Mac Walters, a BioWare veteran who worked on both the Mass Effect and Dragon Age series leaves the studio after over 19 years. The lead writer behind Mass Effect 2 and Mass Effect 3 recently revealed his departure from BioWare, indicating that the decision was made later in 2022.

"With a new year comes new adventures," Walters shared in his recent LinkedIn post. "As some of you already know, at the end of last year I decided to leave BioWare. These past 19 years have been a life-changing experience to say the least, and it made the choice to go very difficult."

Walters started his career at BioWare as a writer for Jade Empire, the famous Chinese mythology-inspired action RPG. The game was released exclusively for the original Xbox back in 2005, but a PC version also arrived two years later. It never launched on PlayStation.

Following Jade Empire, Walters went from strength to strength. He was a senior writer on Mass Effect and acted as the lead writer on both of its sequels. After Mass Effect 3, Walters worked on Anthem for over a year as narrative director before moving on to work on Mass Effect Andromeda as creative director.

Despite his dedication to the franchise, Walters wasn't working on an upcoming Mass Effect project at the time of his departure. Rather, he was the production director for Dragon Age: Dreadwolf, BioWare's next big release. "I’ve worked with so many wonderful people and had the privilege to be a part of the most amazing teams and projects," he continued. "It’s hard to fathom it all, and I know I’ll be reflecting on it for years to come."

"Thank you to everyone I’ve had the joy of working with, and I wish everyone at BioWare the very best in everything you do. It’s truly been a pleasure." Walters hasn't revealed his future plans as of yet.
