The Minecraft community was hopeful that archeology would be added to the game someday, as the long-awaited feature was first announced in 2020 and shown at most of Mojang Studios' events ever since. However, archeology was subsequently delayed twice until Mojang Studios confirmed that it will be coming back with a new block, mechanics, and tool. The developer team provided a breakdown of archeology via a blog post, saying that players can build a career as an archeologist by heading out to a nearby desert.

Mojang Studios reaffirmed that archeology is still in development, meaning the new features in snapshots and betas are subject to change. More dig site areas will be added with the release of archeology, as players will encounter a new block called suspicious sand. Archeology also brings a new tool, The Brush, allowing players to brush their block of suspicious sand. They will extract whatever is hiding within the new block, which can be anything from random objects to pottery shards. Furthermore, players will see a partial pattern painted on the pottery shard, four of which can be combined to create a pot.
In addition to making decorative accents in their buildings, players will explore the desert biome surrounded by sand blocks. They will use the new brush tool to reveal hidden tools while digging and dusting. Also, players will discover elusive Sniffer eggs, which can be hatched into the Sniffer mob. "Pick a nice plot near some desert temples and start shoveling. As we continue to work on archeology, more dig site areas will be added." Mojang Studios said in the blog post.
The first iteration of Minecraft's archeology system will arrive in a snapshot preview on February 15th.
