Resident Evil 5 Receives Surprise Patch After 13 Years

4.1
The PC version of Resident Evil 5 received a new update today, over 13 years after its original release on Steam. With the new patch, Capcom has finally removed the outdated Games For Windows Live requirement from the game and added support for a local split-screen co-op mode.

While Capcom didn't announce the release of the Resident Evil 5 patch, fans quickly noticed that the game received a new update on Steam with some short patch notes earlier today. Aside from the aforementioned changes above, Capcom has fixed a number of bugs with the recent update. At the time of writing, today's patch only appears to have been released for the PC version of the game.

Resident Evil 5 was originally released back in March 2009 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. The PC version arrived after a short delay in September of the same year.

When originally released, Games For Windows Live was Microsoft's special service for PC gamers to benefit from online features in games that used to support multiplayer modes. However, knowing that the service is no longer supported by Microsoft, it is now becoming an annoying part of older games. Developers are now gradually trying to remove the requirement from their titles to keep the multiplayer experience smooth.

Resident Evil 5 received a re-release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles in 2016, but the re-release came without any new enhancement updates. Resident Evil 5 was a critically-acclaimed experience when it first launched, but it remains unknown if Capcom would expand its remaking direction to include the journey of Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar.

Currently, the Japanese developer is working on Resident Evil 4 Remake, which is set to release next month. Previously, Capcom launched remakes of Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil 3, both of which received favorable feedback from the community.

Next to these remakes, Capcom is also following a new storyline in the first-person view that originated from Resident Evil 7 and then reached bigger popularity through Resident Evil Village. Aside from story-driven experiences, Capcom has tried its luck with multiplayer games set in the same universe as well, but none of them became a huge hit for the company.
