The announcement came with a three-minute gameplay trailer, and also a release date announcement of July 20, 2023. This will also mark the first entry in the franchise since 2017's Nobunaga's Ambition: Taishi, which received an enhanced Japanese-only re-release in 2019.
The franchise initially got its start on PC systems all the way back in 1983, with the original game receiving a Famicom port later on as well as a subsequent NES release. As such, Nobunaga's Ambition: Awakening will be released partly as a commemoration of the franchise's 40-year anniversary. Keeping with franchise tradition, Awakening is a strategy game taking place during Japan's 16th century Warring States Period, with players stepping into the shoes of the legendary historical figure Oda Nobunaga. The trailer shows off a slew of micromanagement systems as well as a look at the seemingly expansive battle system, looking to be a substantially deep game for fans of the genre.
Nobunaga's Ambition has consistently received new installments since spanning every console generation. Despite this, it's arguable that its most popular entry was the 2012 spin-off crossover game Pokémon Conquest, which was developed solely by Koei Tecmo, despite Nintendo and The Pokémon Company handling the publishing duties.
Just last week, Koei Tecmo released the RPG Atelier Ryza 3: Alchemist of the End & the Secret Key. The game recieved positive reviews overall, with DualShocker's awarding it a great 8.5 out of 10, praising the game's characters, "addictive exploration", and crafting. As for upcoming titles outside of Nobunaga's Ambition: Awakening, the publisher has only announced Rise of the Ronin, which is a PlayStation 5 console exclusive slated for 2024. While Rise of the Ronin has a gameplay trailer showing off some of the combat and possible traversal methods, little else is known about the game other than it's being developed by Team Ninja, and that it's also described as an action RPG.
Nobunaga's Ambition: Awakening will be released on PlayStation 4, Steam and Nintendo Switch, with there being no word of a PlayStation 5 upgrade or an Xbox version.
