Sony Working to Improve Controls in Mobile Games

3.8
Sony has devised a new patent for improved controls in mobile games. With the increase of prominence in mobile gaming when compared to consoles in the last few years, it’s not surprising that one of the giants of the gaming industry is already thinking of technologies to improve its offerings.

Sony seems to be making a move into the mobile gaming market after its previous attempts with handheld platforms. Previously, the company handheld consoles such as the PSP and PlayStation Vita. The Vita, however, was a commercial failure, which made Sony focus solely on home consoles for some time. Now, according to recent leaks, Sony may be putting out a new handheld soon. The leak suggested that the company was devising a PlayStation handheld console with the codename Q Lite. However, instead of being something like PS Vita or PSP, it would require a PS5 to work and be used for remote play together with the console.

The new Sony patent describes a few methods and systems that will be used to increase the accuracy of controller input in future mobile games. According to the patent, the tech will focus on processing operations for games played on mobile devices, receiving the mobile controller input, and then determining a correction value to perform the action with great accuracy. The expected result from this technology is that mobile controls would run much more smoothly than previously. Other parts of the patent also cite dynamic streaming gameplay on mobile games and more intelligent ways to handle game state saving.

This seems to be the kind of technology that will be very useful for Q Lite, especially if the rumors of it being a handheld that is connected to the PS5 are true. Together with the news that last year Sony acquired Savage Game Studios, a mobile-based gaming developer, this patent indicates strongly that Sony has a growing interest in exploring the profitable mobile market and is already working on new technologies.

While very important to understand more about Sony’s plans for the mobile market, this is not the only patent Sony has sent out to regulators. Sony also has a patent for making lifelike NPC reactions focusing on VR/AR games, but that could also be used in other kinds of experiences. With this new technology, non-player characters in Sony games would be more keenly aware of their 3D surroundings and could interact with them in a faster, more efficient way. This could prevent unreactive characters, improving the immersion of the overall experience.
