Microsoft confirmed it had made the change in a tweet from the official Xbox account.
“We have had to disable the ability to share game uploads to Twitter directly from the console and Game Bar on Windows. You can still share your favorite moments to Twitter via the Xbox app for Android and iOS.”
Users can still upload video clips to Twitter directly from the console. While Microsoft has yet to confirm exactly why it disabled the functionality, it does come in the wake of sweeping changes to Twitter’s API which appear to be designed to make larger corporations on the platform pay significant amounts of money for access to the API.
The changes could see companies charged as much as $42,000 per month in order to access Twitter’s new enterprise package on it’s developer platform, according to Wired.
“Higher tiers give researchers or businesses access to larger volumes of tweets—100 million and 200 million tweets respectively—and cost $125,000 and $210,000 a month. ”
In the absence of on-console functionality for the feature, Xbox’s official account recommended players use the Xbox mobile app to share their screenshots until the issue is resolved.
“A quick lesson on sharing your screenshots & clips to Twitter via your phone (we love to see them!)
go to the Xbox mobile app
select ‘My Library’ -> ‘Captures’
choose your screenshot/clip
select ‘Share’ & then ‘Twitter’
