Assassin's Creed Mirage Will Be Missing Key Parkour Feature

In a recent ask me anything session, Assassin's Creed Mirage Creative Director Stephane Boudon reveals some of the parkour moves that won't be making a return in the upcoming title. Ubisoft's popular action franchise went under a dramatic evolution back in 2017 with Assassin's Creed Origins, which not only gave players a massive open world to explore, but also incorporated stronger role playing elements as well such as an experience system, loot, and skill trees. This design process continued into the next two game sin the series, effectively leaving the more traditional linear and story driven titles by the wayside.

However, after numerous rumors and a few leaks, Assassin's Creed Mirage looks to again change the franchise. Ditching the RPG components and massive open worlds, Mirage is taking the franchise back to its roots by using the original Assassin's Creed as inspiration. Taking place in 9th century Baghdad, players are stepping into the shoes of a younger Basim, who goes from a street thief to a master assassin within the Brotherhood. Mirage also features a much smaller environment, brings back classic Black Box style missions originally seen in Assassin's Creed Unity, and limits the tools that Basim has access to.

However, as much as Assassin's Creed Mirage leans into the classic style games, not everything is being brought back. During a recent AMA session on Reddit, Assassin's Creed Mirage Creative Director Stephane Boudon confirmed that the parkour system won't entirely match fan expectations from the pre-AC3 titles. Specifically, back ejects and side ejects are not included in the parkour system, so fans won't be able to force Basim to jump back from his location or off to the side in one fluid motion.

Boudon went on to speak a bit more about the new parkour systems in Assassin's Creed Mirage, saying that the team focused primarily on making sure the movement nailed the feeling of fluidity and agility. Instead of pinpointing a specific game in the franchise, Ubisoft instead took inspiration from several and put a lot of effort into the small details to make sure players really felt like they had the best feeling of control over Basim.

While some fans may be disappointed by the news, Ubisoft has confirmed a number of returning features which may interest fans of the older games. Specifically, the official Assassin's Creed Twitter account confirmed that Mirage players will once again be able to dye Basim's base outfits to make him their own. There's a greater emphasis on social stealth, using tools like a blow dart and smoke bombs, and players will even have access to a special destaturated blue-grey color palette similar to the effects in the original Assassin's Creed.

Assassin's Creed Mirage is set to release on October 12, 2023 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
