The latest instalment in the acclaimed horror series Outlast came out in Steam early access a couple of months ago, signalling a new direction for the series. While the two previous Outlast games were traditional single-player first-person horror experiences, The Outlast Trials switched up the formula to co-op multiplayer for the first time.
“Yeah, we actually reached 1 million units on PC. It’s overwhelming. I had never worked this long on a game before. It’s actually the longest after Outlast 2, which took three years," Morin told us. "There’s been a lot of ups and downs during production. Obviously, the pandemic had a pretty big impact.”
The Outlast Trials has been in active development for over five years, with the game first being teased in late 2019. After a successful early access release, the team at Red Barrels is focused on pumping out new content for the game.
“We’re in good shape. We just need to create a shit-ton of content,” Morin said bluntly. While Red Barrel has grown in size in recent years, they’re still quite a small outfit compared to triple-A developers, so creating content for a multiplayer experience is “a lot.”
“The foundations of the game are solid, and it’s out there in the world. It’s really about adding twists and surprises to keep the experience as fresh as possible from one time to another.”
