Doom Developer id Software Hiring for New First-Person Game

4.3
The development studio behind the 2016 Doom reboot and its highly praised sequel, id Software, is hiring for another first-person game. It's been over three years since id Software's latest title Doom Eternal released to immaculate reviews and acclaim. Even being nominated for Game of the Year at the 2020 Game Awards, Eternal has been lauded as one of the best FPS titles of all time.

Ever since Doom Eternal's final DLC, The Ancient Gods Part 2, released a year later in 2021, fans have been speculating about what id Software will tackle next. With The Ancient Gods putting a bow on the Doom Slayer's story, and fellow Bethesda studio MachineGames becoming the more-than-competent handler of the Wolfenstein franchise, fans have been pointing toward Quake and even Rage as territory id Software could visit next. Since the latter is the much lesser appreciated franchise, a possible Quake reboot has become a popular candidate, especially with Quake 2 recently receiving an impressive remaster.

The mystery surrounding id Software's next title may begin clearing up, as a recent job posting hones in on the likely genre of the game. Posting on LinkedIn, id Software put up a job posting for a Senior Weapons and Prop Artist. Most notably, the role requires the candidate to have worked on and shipped at least one first-person title. It's a bit puzzling as to why id Software is hiring for such a position at seemingly such a late stage. Barring any major setbacks, and according to traditional timelines of AAA games, production on the studio's next game would've begun right after Doom Eternal's launch three years ago, or after The Ancient Gods Part 2 DLC in 2021.

Even more importantly, vehicles are also mentioned in id Software's job post. Interestingly, Rage is id Software's only franchise to feature the use of vehicles. While certainly possible, it's highly doubtful id Software would add vehicles to Doom or even a potential Quake reboot, as such franchises have historically been laser-focused on player movement and robust first-person arsenals. That leaves either Rage 3 or an entirely new IP, however, with how poorly received Rage 2 was in 2019, it's difficult to imagine the lauded studio revisiting the Mad Max-inspired apocalyptic shooter.

With the posting also mentioning the team "making AAA games," it's also a possibility that id Software could be cooking up multiple games with different internal teams, but this is merely speculation. As nothing official has been confirmed by id Software, Bethesda, or Xbox thus far, fans will have to wait longer to learn about the celebrated studio's new FPS title. Perhaps the studio will be ready to reveal its new project next year, as it'll be four years since launching Doom Eternal.
