Metal Bringer Hands-On Impression + Interview

4.4
Recently announced at Gamescom, the roguelike action-adventure game Metal Bringer looks like Hades with an Armor Core-inspired level of customization (one of the Metal Bringer writers previously worked on an Armored Core novelization.) Playism’s previous game, Samurai Bringer, was a top-down roguelike with in-depth customization set in a feudal Japan setting with a 3D pixel art style.

The devs wanted to blend the feeling of an older PlayStation One title with modern fluidity with Unreal Engine 5 according to Michael Kobayashi of Playism’s international operations.

In the futuristic setting of Metal Bringer, people live underground and have forgotten what the sky looks like. The game's protagonist, a girl named Surai who has been in cryosleep for 1000 years, wakes up and begins a search for the rest of humanity. Surai builds android soldiers called “Labor” to go out into the world to explore. This is where the in-depth customization from the first game is pushed to a new level.

Following Samurai Bringer, the devs wanted to push the level of customization to another level, said Kobayashi.

You can choose to build and customize Labor in whatever style you choose, or you can have them pilot giant mechs called “Arms”, which you can also customize. Along with changing the color and appearance, you can swap out parts that will drastically alter the fighting style of the mechs.

As you can expect from roguelikes, you can get stronger with each run in Metal Bringer. Collecting disks during your runs allows you to install new “apps” in Labor which will grant you new power-ups and make you feel stronger in a satisfying way.

Metal Bringer is coming to PC in 2024, you can add the game to your Steam wishlist now.
