Announced in May 2021, the Japanese publisher’s Super Game project will span multiple “triple-A titles that cross over Sega’s comprehensive range of technologies” and “go beyond the traditional framework of games”, according to the company’s co-chief operating officer, Shuji Utsumi.
Sega provided an update on the first game in the project, which remains scheduled for release in the next few years, in its annual integrated report, which was published on Wednesday.
“The Entertainment Contents Business has set a long-term goal of becoming a leading global content provider,” said Sega president Yukio Sugino.
“To achieve this goal and elevate the business to the next level, we are conducting R&D activities to create a ‘Super Game,’ a major title that scales globally, by the fiscal year ending March 2026.”
Utsumi also commented: “We are also making steady headway in development of the ‘Super Game’ that we are seeking to create in the medium to long term. As the name implies, a ‘Super Game’ involves the concept of a game that stands head and shoulders above normal games.
“I encourage stakeholders to look forward to the fruit of our efforts, which include R&D to create a game that builds a whole worldview involving the entire gaming ecosystem, including not only players but also streamers who stream the game and their viewers”.
In November 2021, Sega said it would consider investing up to ¥100 billion (then $882 million) over the next five years to achieve its Super Game ambitions.
The company announced last month that it was cancelling Creative Assembly‘s Hyenas and “some unannounced titles” in development.
Live service multiplayer shooter Hyenas, which had been scheduled for release this year, was reportedly Sega’s biggest budget game ever before the company pulled the plug.
