Sledgehammer Games‘ Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III looks set to give the series an unwanted accolade in becoming the franchise’s lowest-rated entry to date. While things could change as it has only just come out, the Metacritic at the time of writing for MW3 is 50, considerably lower than the previous record holder, Call of Duty: Vanguard.

For Modern Warfare 3’s fortunes in this regard to change, it will need to score a number of very positive reviews to improve its overall Metacritic average. Things aren’t looking good right now though, and is just another example in a long line of disappointments for the game, which has attracted a lot of criticism in the past few weeks.

Chiefly, critics and players alike have noted just how poor the single-player campaign is, clocking it at only a few hours long. Beyond that, Activision has been forced to pull a number of multiplayer maps due to their poor spawn points.

Beyond that, Bloomberg reported that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III was developed in around 16 months, considerably less time than other entries in the franchise. Sledgehammer issued a statement soon after that shot down these claims, and said the company is “incredibly proud” of the game.

Still, it doesn’t help matters that Modern Warfare III was originally reported to have been conceived as DLC for MW2, and when you look a the short campaign and reported rushed development cycle, you do have to wonder what really happened with the project.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare III is available now for PS5, PS4, PC, Xbox Series X/S, and Xbox One.
