The original Battlefield game launched in 2002 and is often hailed as one of the most important and innovative FPS games of all time. Many of the games that followed earn similar praise, with EA eventually positioning Battlefield as the chief rival to Activision's Call of Duty franchise. Some of the more popular Battlefield games on consoles were Bad Company and its sequel, but soon the online services for those games will be shut down forever.
On December 8, the online multiplayer services for Battlefield 1943, Battlefield: Bad Company, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 will be shut down. Battlefield fans were alerted to these shutdowns earlier in the year when all three games were delisted and removed from sale. Anyone wanting to experience the multiplayer modes for these games has less than a month to do so, and since the games were delisted, they will need to track down physical copies if they want to try to get into any games.
Battlefield Game Servers Getting Shut Down on December 8
Battlefield 1943 (PS3/Xbox 360)
Battlefield: Bad Company (PS3/Xbox 360)
Battlefield: Bad Company 2 (PC/PS3/Xbox 360)
It's always sad when a game's online servers are shut down, but it may be particularly disappointing for Battlefield fans considering the current state of the franchise. While Battlefield 2042 updates have gone a long way in improving the game since launch, many would agree that it's still far from the best titles in the long-running FPS series. Many diehard Battlefield fans have called on DICE and EA to return the franchise to its glory days, but it has yet to happen.
Many fans would likely jump at the opportunity to play something like Battlefield: Bad Company 3, especially now that the first two games have already been delisted and are having their online multiplayer services shut down. Others would be happy with a new Battlefield game that uses a modern warfare setting like Battlefield 3 or Battlefield 4, a setting that the series hasn't really used since 2013.
The future of the Battlefield franchise remains uncertain at the time of this writing, but fans can continue playing Battlefield 1943, Battlefield: Bad Company, and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 multiplayer until December 8. After that, they will have to be satisfied playing one of the more recent Battlefield games.
