Firmware version 23.02-08.40.00 can now be downloaded directly from the PS5 console, but it doesn’t appear to be a major update.
According to Sony the release notes are as follows:
“We’ve made some security fixes to the system software.”
“We’ve improved system software performance and stability.”
“We’ve improved the messages and usability on some screens.”
Although most minor system updates tend to improve system performance, the security fix notice is less common.
The last notable software update was version 23.03-08.20.00, which was released in October. That update made Music in the control centre easier to use with a two-column layout that simplified browsing.
The update also meant that players could avoid unintentionally broadcasting their surroundings while broadcasting PlayStation VR2 games, as well use a new voice command to check for new PS5 features.
The last major system update, however, was back in July and added Dolby Atmos support and new accessibility options, such as the ability to assign a second controller as an ‘assist controller’ to a single account, and the ability to turn on haptic feedback while navigating the PS5 system menu.
Sony launched the new PlayStation 5 Slim console in the United Kingdom on November 29, following a US debut earlier in the month.
Like the launch model, the new PS5 is available in the form of a standard edition featuring a disc drive and a Digital Edition without one.
However, unlike with the current model, those who purchase the new PS5 Digital Edition can also purchase an attachable Blu-ray disc drive, which is being sold separately for $79.99 / €119.99 / £99.99.
The new PS5 also requires a $30 / €30 / £25 stand if users want to position the console upright.
