Bellwright continues to shine with new Game Awards trailer

4.4
The next two years are looking very good indeed for the game industry – at least if the trailers at The Game Awards are anything to go on. Amongst one of the upcoming highlights for early next year is Bellwright, a survival, town-building RPG that looks absolutely fantastic every time we see more.

Coming from developer Donkey Crew, you have to build and craft your township into being, turning the fields and forests into farms, blacksmiths and fortifications, culminating in what looks to be some serious castle action. It’s a beautiful-looking title, and it feels as though people are going to spend hundreds of hours just getting the look of their town right.

There’s a narrative running through it all as well, with your character returning after a period of exile to lead a revolution and take on the crown.

We got to go see the game in action at this year’s Gamescom, and I was blown away by the possibilities that Bellwright is going to bring. You can play your own way, chilling out at the farmstead, or stoking those fires of rebellion, and the game will adapt to how you’re playing it.

It’s not all rural solitude and contemplation though. During our time at Gamescom we got to see that Bellwright is in many ways a hugely effective medieval simulation, priming you to build defences and infrastructure to protect the local populace from roaming bandits and those loyal to the sovereign. Preparing the town for battle includes sending archers to the battlements, building a watchtower and drafting in a batch of citizens into military service, all just in time for a raid to appear on the horizon. As they advanced towards the settlement your player character can join in with the action, adding your arrows to the ranged attack before wading in with a sword when the attackers eventually broke through the sturdy gate. They were easily mopped up by the defenders, but there were a tense few minutes in between.

Bellwright already has over 300,000 wishlists on Steam – mine included, and is due to launch into Early Access in early 2024.
