Rumor: Call of Duty 2025 Making Big Change Based on MW3

3.8
Call of Duty 2025 seems to be making some serious adjustments following the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3. Call of Duty's most recent entry featured recycled maps at launch and a lackluster campaign, leading some fans to disagree with its full price tag of $70.

It was previously reported that Call of Duty 2025 would be a Black Ops 2 sequel and that all of its maps would be remastered levels from the 2012 title, similar to how Modern Warfare 3 mostly consisted of maps from 2009's Modern Warfare 2. While this strategy was a hit with some fans of the classic Call of Duty game, other fans felt that Modern Warfare 3 did not deserve to be a flagship Call of Duty release, and should have been treated as a premium DLC. Following the backlash surrounding Modern Warfare 3's lack of new maps, it seems that Activision has new plans for Call of Duty 2025.

Insider Gaming reported that Call of Duty 2025 will now feature a mixture of remastered Black Ops 2 maps and new, original maps, according to multiple sources. One of these sources speculated that this is a direct response to criticism surrounding Modern Warfare 3's maps. The game is still set to be a sequel to Black Ops 2 and will take place in 2030, five years after the events of Black Ops 2's campaign. This will be the first Call of Duty game set in the future since 2018's Black Ops 4.

Treyarch is developing Call of Duty 2024 which is also rumored to be a Black Ops title, but is set during the Gulf War in the early 1990s. It's not known whether Treyarch is developing Call of Duty 2025 as well, or if Sledgehammer will take up that responsibility, which seems to be the more likely scenario. Infinity Ward has never developed a Black Ops title and will likely be hard at work on its own Call of Duty game.

It's possible that Call of Duty 2025's return to the future will see the series' "jetpack" movement system reappear, which allows players to fly through the air for an added dimension in gunfights. Call of Duty games featured this mechanic from 2014 to 2016, until the series returned to its traditional movement style. This feature was quite controversial, and it may be considered too divisive for it to see a return. However, this is purely speculation.
