Although Halo Infinite has certainly made a big comeback compared to the underwhelming state that it originally launched in, it's fair to say that it's been a pretty rough time for the series over the past few years. That wasn't the case a few years back, however, as there were previously several promising Halo projects in the works that have we've heard barely anything of in recent years.
One such unannounced project was a Battle Royale game set in the Halo universe from Certain Affinity, who helped develop Halo Infinite. The unrevealed game was called Project Tatanka and was first reported on as far back as April 2022. Last year, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier even reported on the project, saying that it had evolved "in different directions" after starting out as a Battle Royale game.
We've not heard anything about Project Tatanka or the future of the Halo series in quite some time, but it seems that there might be some bad news for anyone who was hoping for a Spartan-focused Battle Royale. As shared on the GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit, gaming insider Shpeshal_Nick recently talked about the game during an episode of the XboxEra podcast, and claimed that it has been cancelled.
During the podcast, Shpeshal_Nick brings up the rumour and reports that insider ColtEastwood has claimed that the project has been shelved, something that he then confirms is something that he and the other hosts of the XboxEra podcast have heard as well. The insiders then speculate whether it's been shelved or cancelled, with Shpeshal_Nick claiming that it's outright been cancelled and isn't likely to make a comeback.
It's worth remembering that Schreier's report previously claimed that it had "evolved" into something else other than a Battle Royale game, so whatever Certain Affinity has been working on could eventually see the light of day as something other than a title in that genre. Right now, though, Shpeshal_Nick and the other XboxEra insiders seem pretty confident that the project has just outright been scrapped and won't see the light of day at all.
